The Madras White Buffalos finally got into the win column Friday night, pulling off a 40-36 thriller over the Coquille Red Devils at home to snap a three-game losing streak to open the 2026 season.
It was the highest-scoring performance the Buffalos have put together all year, and the victory could not have come at a better time — with league play just around the corner.
A Season-High Offensive Output
After being outscored 101-38 in their first three games — losses to Molalla (35-14), Phoenix (30-6), and Douglas (36-18) — the White Buffalos came out firing on all cylinders at home. The offense clicked in a way it hadn’t in the early weeks of the season, putting up 40 points against the Red Devils and holding on through a tight finish.
Coquille came in at 0-4 and entered the game having been on a lengthy losing streak dating back into last season, but the Red Devils made Madras earn every point — their 36 points represented a season-high for them as well. In the end, it was the Buffalos who came out on top in the four-point decision.
Win Bumps Record to 1-3
The victory moves Madras to 1-3 on the season. While the record still shows more losses than wins, the timing matters: the White Buffalos enter league play this week, and conference results are what ultimately determine playoff positioning.
The Buffalos are currently ranked 138th in the Oregon MaxPreps rankings — a significant gap from their next opponent. Madras heads on the road Saturday, October 3, to face Klamath Union (ranked 47th) at 6 p.m. in what will be the league opener for both teams.
Looking Ahead
After the Klamath Union road trip, the Buffalos return home on October 9 to host Pleasant Hill before another road contest at Elmira on October 16. The pivotal rivalry matchup against Sisters closes the regular season on October 30.
Friday’s win demonstrated what this Madras offense is capable of when everything comes together. If the Buffalos can carry that momentum into league play, there’s still plenty of season ahead to make a push.
