Madras welcomed its first annual "Books, Bites & Harvest Delights" event last Saturday, drawing vendors and visitors to enjoy the best of the fall harvest season as Central Oregon transitions from summer into autumn.
The inaugural event, held October 11 in Madras, featured local artisans, small producers, and vendors showcasing handmade goods and homegrown products. Among the participants was Kelsey McIntyre, who offered goat milk products and home-canned goods to shoppers eager to stock up for the season.
The event ran the same weekend as the well-established 47th Sisters Harvest Faire — a regional tradition that drew more than 10,000 visitors and 180 vendors to Sisters on October 10-11. Together, the two events signaled a strong local appetite for harvest-season gatherings across Jefferson County and Central Oregon.
A New Tradition Takes Root in Jefferson County
"Books, Bites & Harvest Delights" is designed to celebrate the creativity and agricultural heritage that define the Madras area, blending locally produced food, handcrafted goods, and reading culture in a single event. Organizers hope the gathering will grow in future years, establishing Madras as a destination for fall shoppers and visitors looking to experience the region's small-town character.
Jefferson County sits at the heart of Central Oregon's agricultural belt — home to dryland wheat, cattle ranching, hay production, mint, and specialty crops. Fall is a natural time for communities to gather and celebrate the close of the growing season.
Fall Fair Season Across Central Oregon
With October bringing cooler temperatures and turning leaves across the high desert, fall fairs and markets are in full swing throughout the region. From Maupin to Madras to Culver, county residents are encouraged to support local vendors, many of whom depend on fall events for a significant share of their annual income.
Community members looking for more information about upcoming events in Jefferson County can check with the Madras Pioneer and the Jefferson County Community and Senior Center for a full calendar of fall activities — including painting classes on Tuesday mornings, a Trunk-or-Treat hosted by the Madras Elks Lodge on October 31, and more through the end of the month.
Whether browsing handmade ceramics in Sisters or picking up farm-fresh canned goods in Madras, this weekend reminded residents across the county that fall in Central Oregon is a season worth celebrating close to home.
