Jefferson County's finest are trading sirens for espresso in a friendly rivalry for a great cause. This Friday, October 16, the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and Jefferson County Fire and EMS will square off at The Human Bean in Madras in a day-long "Real Men Wear Pink" Coffee for a Cure fundraiser benefiting breast cancer research.
The event runs from 5 a.m. all day long, giving Madras residents plenty of opportunity to swing by, grab their morning cup — or afternoon pick-me-up — and cast a vote with their wallet for their favorite local first responders.
A Friendly Rivalry
Leading the charge from the Sheriff's Office is Corporal Jeremy Skeels, while Jefferson County Fire and EMS is represented by Conner Bowman. Both are participating in the American Cancer Society's "Real Men Wear Pink" campaign, which challenges community leaders and public figures to use their platform to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research during Breast Cancer Awareness Month each October.
The two departments have kept up this friendly competition in past years, with each side rallying their supporters to come out and tip the scales with their coffee orders. Whichever team raises more earns community bragging rights for the year — a prize that, judging by the enthusiasm of past participants, matters quite a bit.
Why It Matters
Breast cancer remains one of the most commonly diagnosed cancers among women in the United States. Community fundraising events like Coffee for a Cure help fund vital research programs, patient support services, and early detection education — and events like this one serve as a visible reminder that local first responders are deeply invested in the health and well-being of the people they serve, beyond just emergency calls.
"It's a great way for us to connect with the community and support a cause that touches so many families right here in Jefferson County."
