The Jefferson County Fair is still happening — but one beloved tradition will be missing this summer. The fair board announced that carnival rides will not be available at the 2026 event after the fair’s regular carnival operator backed out due to an inability to staff their crew.

The fair runs July 22–25 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras, and organizers are emphatic: the event is not canceled. All other programming, livestock shows, competitions, food vendors, and community activities are expected to proceed as planned.

Why No Rides?

According to the fair board, their contracted carnival company informed them that staffing shortages made it impossible to operate at this year’s event. The board worked to find an alternative carnival operator but was ultimately unsuccessful.

It’s a challenge facing fairs and traveling attractions across the country, where seasonal labor shortages have disrupted events from small county fairs to larger regional festivals.

What’s Still at the Fair

Despite the absence of carnival rides, the Jefferson County Fair still promises plenty for families and community members:

  • Livestock shows and 4-H exhibits
  • Local food vendors and fair food
  • Live entertainment
  • Agricultural and artisan displays
  • Community booths and local organization showcases

Fair organizers are encouraging the community to show up and support the event. Jefferson County’s fair is one of the longest-running community gatherings in Central Oregon, and officials say the spirit of the event remains fully intact.
