After years of watching Central Oregon's fall fair circuit run largely through Sisters and Bend, Jefferson County stepped into the spotlight last weekend with its very own harvest celebration — and the community showed up for it.

The inaugural Books, Bites & Harvest Delights event took place Saturday, October 11, at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Madras, drawing vendors, farmers, artisans, and shoppers for a day of locally grown produce, handmade goods, and yes, a few good books.

Thirteen Vendors, All Rooted in the Region

The event featured 13 vendors, each bringing something distinctly local to the table. Among them was Kelsey McIntyre, who drew a steady stream of curious visitors to her booth selling goat milk products and home-canned goods — the kind of small-batch, Central Oregon agriculture that rarely makes it onto the Bend farmers market circuit.

Organizers built the event with a clear purpose: give Jefferson County producers a closer-to-home venue so they could connect directly with their neighbors rather than hauling goods across the county line. The fairgrounds near downtown Madras proved a natural gathering spot, and the fall weather cooperated.

Part of a Bigger Fall Harvest Weekend

The Madras event shared the weekend with the 47th annual Sisters Harvest Faire, which attracted thousands of visitors to Sisters from across the state. Painter Jill Haney-Neal was among the artists selling work there, as the long-running event drew its usual strong crowd.

Together, the two fairs painted a picture of Central Oregon's deep autumn tradition of celebrating the harvest season — and the Madras event signaled that Jefferson County is ready to stake its own claim on that calendar.

Looking Ahead

No official announcement has been made yet on whether Books, Bites & Harvest Delights will return in 2027, but community response to the inaugural event has been encouraging. If first-year turnout is any measure, Jefferson County may have a new fall tradition on its hands.

Residents who missed this year can watch the Jefferson County Fairgrounds social media channels and local postings for future event dates. For producers and artisans interested in vending at a future event, keeping an eye on fairgrounds announcements is the best first step.

The Fairgrounds Are More Than a Fairweather Venue

The Jefferson County Fairgrounds hosts a range of community events throughout the year and serves as a hub for agricultural programming, 4-H, and seasonal gatherings. Saturday's harvest fair added another chapter to a venue that is already woven into the fabric of Madras and the surrounding community.
