Racing fans in Jefferson County have a full weekend of action ahead at the Madras Dragstrip, where gates opened this morning and competition kicks off at 9:30 a.m. today and again tomorrow.
The dragstrip’s June race weekend is one of the busiest on the calendar, drawing competitors and spectators from across Central Oregon and beyond. The facility, operated by the High Desert Racing Association, offers one of the few sanctioned drag racing venues in the Pacific Northwest outside the Willamette Valley.
Weekend Schedule
- Saturday, June 28: Gates open 8:00 a.m., racing begins 9:30 a.m.
- Sunday, June 29: Gates open 8:00 a.m., racing begins 9:30 a.m.
Spectators are welcome both days. Admission and class details are available at the track. The Madras Dragstrip is located southeast of Madras off Highway 97.
A Summer Tradition
Drag racing at Madras has a long history, drawing local gearheads and serious competitors who travel to participate in the high-altitude racing conditions that the Madras plateau provides. The elevation and dry conditions can produce unique performance dynamics compared to sea-level tracks.
The June race weekend is notable as one of the summer’s signature events, falling between the spring season opener and the later summer championship events. For many participants, it’s also a final chance to run before the most extreme summer heat takes hold.
With the Gambler 500 also wrapping up in the Madras area this weekend, the region is hosting an unusually full slate of automotive events — from homemade off-road contraptions in the grasslands to purpose-built race machines at the strip.
