Jefferson County joins the rest of the nation today in observing Memorial Day — the federal holiday designated to honor military service members who gave their lives in service to the United States.

Memorial Day falls on the last Monday of May each year. Government offices, including the Jefferson County Courthouse, the County Clerk's office, and most city offices in Madras, Culver, and Metolius, are closed today. Many local businesses are also operating on reduced hours or are closed entirely.

A Day of Remembrance

The holiday has deep roots in Jefferson County's communities, where military service has long been part of local identity. Veterans' organizations across Central Oregon typically hold ceremonies, wreath layings, and moments of reflection on this day.

At the state level, the Oregon Department of Veterans' Affairs is hosting its annual Statewide Memorial Day Ceremony at 11 a.m. at the Oregon State Capitol in Salem, honoring Oregon's fallen service members from all eras of service.

The National Moment of Remembrance

The National Moment of Remembrance asks all Americans to pause for one minute at 3:00 p.m. local time to honor and reflect on the sacrifice of those who died in military service.
