Sometimes curiosity pays off. For Madras residents Susan and Atilla Kovari, following a classic car through town on a whim led to an unexpected discovery — and a trophy.
The Kovaris spotted a vintage Triumph TR3 rolling through Madras and, intrigued, decided to follow it. The car led them to the Bunkhouse Hotel, where a gathering of classic car enthusiasts had already assembled. The event turned out to be the All Triumph Drive In, hosted this year at the Erickson Air Museum in Madras.
The couple had no idea the event was taking place. But as owners of a Triumph TR3 themselves, they fit right in.
Roughly 100 Cars, Owners from Two Countries
The All Triumph Drive In brought together roughly 100 vehicles and their owners from across the United States and Canada. The event is organized by the Triumph Register of America (TRA), an organization dedicated to classic Triumph models from the TR2 through TR4A — the “quintessential classic” era of British sports cars.
The Kovaris entered their TR3 in the show. They won third place.
“The cars brought everyone together, but the people made the event special. We didn’t realize how much camaraderie existed among Triumph owners,” Atilla Kovari said. “The friendships, stories, and connections we made were every bit as memorable as the cars themselves.”
A Message That Resonated
TRA President Bruce Clough addressed the attendees with a line that stuck with the Kovaris.
“Our cars were meant to drive, we drive them, and glad to see you do too.”
That spirit — of actually using and enjoying these vintage machines rather than just preserving them — seemed to define the whole weekend.
Another Win for Madras as a Destination
The All Triumph Drive In is one of several specialty car events that have found their way to Jefferson County in recent years. The Erickson Air Museum, with its unique collection of vintage military aircraft and spacious grounds, has become a natural gathering spot for enthusiasts of all kinds.
For the Kovaris, the experience was a reminder of what makes small towns like Madras worth paying attention to. The event brought visitors from across North America to Jefferson County — and a local couple discovered a piece of their own community they didn’t know existed.
