Madras Municipal Airport is getting a federal investment that pilots and aviation safety advocates have been waiting on for some time.
The U.S. Department of Transportation announced this week that the airport will receive $102,769 as part of a nearly $19 million statewide package for Oregon airport infrastructure improvements. The funds will support the design phase for replacing the airport’s existing Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) — equipment that provides real-time weather data critical to safe flight operations.
Why It Matters
The AWOS at Madras Municipal Airport has been in need of an upgrade for years. As far back as November 2025, airport officials flagged the system as aging and applied for federal funding through the DOT’s Airport Improvement Program, noting at the time they expected to hear back in spring 2026.
Lorraine Martinelli, airport manager for Madras Municipal Airport, highlighted the safety implications of the upgrade in comments following the announcement. Up-to-date weather data is particularly important at Madras, where high desert flying conditions — including rapidly changing winds, temperature inversions, and wildfire smoke during fire season — can pose significant hazards.
A Statewide Investment
The federal package covers eight Oregon airports in total. Portland International Airport received the lion’s share at more than $13 million for runway and taxiway rehabilitation. Madras was among the rural airports benefiting from the remaining funds.
U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley, who helped announce the funding alongside Sen. Ron Wyden and members of the Oregon congressional delegation, emphasized the importance of investing in smaller airports.
“Investing in critical airport improvements — such as runways, weather observation and safety systems — will allow these hubs to continue to support small businesses, local communities and Oregon’s economy for years to come,” Merkley said.
Next Steps
The funding covers the design phase only. Once design work is complete, the airport would need additional appropriations to proceed with actual construction and installation of the new system. Airport officials are expected to begin the procurement process for design services in the coming months.
Madras Municipal Airport serves general aviation traffic and plays a role in emergency air response for Jefferson County and the broader region.
