Jefferson County Fire & EMS is preparing for a significant leadership transition after Interim Fire Chief Kasey Skaar submitted his resignation on Tuesday, October 20 — citing a desire to prioritize his family while pursuing a new professional chapter in wildfire operations.
Skaar's last day with the department will be December 4, capping a career that stretched more than two decades in Jefferson County's fire service.
A New Chapter in Wildfire Work
In letters shared with department staff and the district's board of directors, Skaar announced he has accepted a position as a Technical Program Manager in Wildfire Operations at Portland General Electric — work he described as deeply aligned with his professional passion.
"This opportunity will allow me to continue working in an area I care deeply about, focusing on wildfire operations, risk reduction, and community safety while bringing the experience and relationships I have gained throughout my career," Skaar wrote.
Skaar served as the department's interim fire chief following a previous leadership change, and his departure now leaves Jefferson County Fire & EMS searching for new permanent direction heading into winter.
Gratitude for Two Decades of Service
In a note to staff and board members, Skaar singled out Captains Mark Johnson and Tom Jaca for their mentorship over the years.
"Their mentorship, guidance, and support helped me get to where I am today, and I will always be grateful for the impact they have had on my life and career," he wrote.
Skaar also thanked the Beebee family for their early support, and acknowledged the broader network of colleagues and community partners who shaped his time with the department.
"The fire service has been a significant part of my life for more than two decades, and Jefferson County Fire & EMS will always hold a special place in my heart," he said. "However, my family has made many sacrifices throughout my career, and I have reached a point where I need to make them my number one priority."
What Comes Next
With Skaar's departure effective December 4, Jefferson County Fire & EMS will need to identify interim or permanent leadership in the coming weeks. The department covers a wide geographic area across Jefferson County, including Madras, Metolius, Culver, and surrounding rural communities that depend on it for emergency medical services as well as fire response.
No announcement has been made yet regarding a search for a successor. Residents with questions about fire and EMS services can contact Jefferson County Fire & EMS directly.
