The smoke was thick and the fire news was relentless, but Jefferson County showed up for its annual fair anyway -- and by most accounts, the community needed it.
The Jefferson County Fair ran through last week at the fairgrounds in Madras, bringing together 4-H and FFA youth, livestock exhibitors, vendors, and thousands of county residents despite wildfire smoke hanging over much of Central Oregon. The Jefferson County School District briefly canceled summer programming on July 27 due to rapidly changing conditions nearby, but the fair itself continued operating.
New Attractions and Old Favorites
This year's fair featured several new attractions alongside the classic livestock shows, carnival rides, and local food vendors that draw crowds every summer. One of the more unexpected highlights: the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office distributed trading cards featuring deputies and staff, which proved popular with kids and adults alike.
The 4-H and FFA livestock auction was a standout event, with local buyers supporting youth producers from across the county. Central Oregon Ranch Supply stepped up in a big way, donating one-quarter beef from the auction -- to be raffled off by the local VFW at the upcoming Airshow of the Cascades in late August.
Community First
For many Jefferson County families, the fair is about more than rides and ribbon competitions. It is a touchstone of rural community identity -- a place where ranching families, reservation residents, town businesses, and newcomers share the same patch of ground for a few days each summer.
"Even with everything going on, people wanted to be together," one attendee noted. With evacuation orders affecting parts of the county during the week, the fairgrounds also served as an informal gathering point for people checking in on neighbors and sharing information about the fires.
Looking Ahead
The VFW is continuing to sell raffle tickets for the beef giveaway through August -- tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office or from any VFW member. Drawing will take place during the Airshow of the Cascades on August 28-29 at the Madras Municipal Airport.
Fair organizers have not yet announced dates for the 2027 event, but results from this year's livestock competitions and premium auction will be posted on the Jefferson County Fair's official website.
