Mark your calendars: the 2026 Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo runs July 22–25 at the Jefferson County Event Complex on Fairgrounds Road in Madras, and organizers say it is shaping up to be one of the largest fairs the county has seen — carnival rides notwithstanding.
No Carnival This Year
In a surprise announced late last month, the fair will not feature its traditional carnival. Bart Platt, manager of the Jefferson County Event Complex, confirmed that the fair's annual carnival vendor informed the county it could not staff the event this year due to a widespread shortage of carnival workers — a challenge facing fairs and festivals nationwide.
"Unfortunately, our carnival provider informed us that they are unable to attend this year's fair due to a shortage of workers," Platt said. The county was unable to secure an alternative vendor before the fair's deadline.
While the loss of rides and midway games will disappoint some families, fair organizers emphasize that the carnival is just one piece of what the fair offers.
What to Expect
The four-day event will still deliver the full agricultural and community experience the fair is known for, including:
- Livestock exhibits — cattle, sheep, goats, swine, poultry, and rabbits on display and in competition
- 4-H and FFA showcases — local youth presenting months of hard work in farming, cooking, sewing, and more
- Open class competitions — art, baked and canned goods, vegetables, pickles, folk arts, and wine
- Rodeo action — the heart of the event, featuring classic Western events and professional competitors
- Live entertainment — musical performances and stage shows across the four days
- Local vendors and fair food — dozens of vendors showcasing Jefferson County businesses and classic fair fare
A Beloved Central Oregon Tradition
The Jefferson County Fair and Rodeo has anchored summer in Madras for generations, celebrating the region's agricultural roots and tight-knit community. The Event Complex — a 50-plus-acre facility that is also home to the Madras Speedway and numerous community gatherings throughout the year — comes alive each July as the county's premier gathering.
"We are in the memories business," the fair's Facebook page reads. "Who doesn't remember going to the fair with their family and friends?"
