Starting this Tuesday, June 23, Madras residents will have a new way to access fresh, locally grown food at no cost. The Madras Community Food Pantry is launching a new summer program called Locally Nourished — a monthly pop-up that brings farmers-market-style fresh produce directly to the pantry's location at 370 SW Culver Highway.

The program runs once a month from June through mid-October. After this Tuesday's inaugural pop-up, the remaining dates are:

  • Tuesday, July 22
  • Wednesday, August 19
  • Wednesday, September 16
  • Wednesday, October 14

Free Produce, Local Farmers

The Locally Nourished booths give community members a chance to meet the local farmers growing their food and take home fresh produce — all for free. It's modeled on the farmers-market experience, bringing that feel of direct farmer-to-consumer connection to a food assistance setting.

The program is particularly timely given Jefferson County's rich agricultural base. The county produces grass seed, potatoes, mint, and a variety of vegetables, and initiatives that connect local production to local food insecurity address both economic and community health goals at once.
