Jefferson County voters will soon find their November 2026 ballots in their mailboxes — and the most competitive local race on this year's ballot may be the one closest to home. Three seats on the Madras City Council are up for grabs, and six candidates have filed to fill them.

Oregon's vote-by-mail system means most county residents will receive ballots beginning around October 16. Ballots must be returned to the Jefferson County Clerk's Office or an official drop box by 8 p.m. on Election Day, November 3. Ballots postmarked by Election Day are also accepted by mail.

The Madras City Council Race

Three seats are open on the Madras City Council this fall — including two that were recently filled by appointment to vacancies, meaning voters will now choose permanent occupants. Six candidates have filed for those positions:

  • Tony Chard
  • Maryfrances Purschwitz
  • Tanya Murren
  • Kaitlyn Lynch
  • Bill Robathan
  • Eric Timmerman

The top three vote-getters will claim the open seats. City council members serve four-year terms and weigh in on city budgets, land use, utility rates, public safety funding, and the strategic direction of Madras as a growing community.

Candidate Forums

The Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce has been hosting candidate forums ahead of the election, giving residents the chance to hear directly from those seeking office. If you missed earlier forums, check with the Chamber or the Madras Pioneer for recordings or summaries.
