November is National Native American Heritage Month, a time for communities across Oregon to honor the histories, cultures, and contributions of Indigenous peoples. In Jefferson County — home to the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs — the month brings local events, cultural programming, and a meaningful opportunity to connect with the county's deep Native roots.
Native Market and Community Meal — Nov. 11 at St. Charles Madras
One of the first events of the month takes place on Veterans Day, Tuesday, November 11, at St. Charles Madras. A Native Market will be open inside the main entrance from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., featuring local vendors selling jewelry, traditional foods, clothing, and more.
Alongside the market, St. Charles is hosting a Together at the Table community meal — free and open to the public. Fry bread tacos and cultural foods will be served starting at 11 a.m. It is a welcoming event for community members of all backgrounds.
The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs
The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs — made up of the Warm Springs, Wasco, and Paiute peoples — are a cornerstone of Jefferson County life. The Warm Springs Reservation encompasses roughly 640,000 acres in north-central Oregon, and tribal members are neighbors, coworkers, and community leaders throughout the region.
The tribe's Natural Resources Branch manages wildlife, fisheries, and forestry across tribal lands, with more than 15 years of expertise in wildlife biology and conservation. The Confederated Tribes also operate a wide range of economic, health, education, and cultural programs that serve both tribal members and the surrounding community.
Oregon Celebrates Statewide
Across Oregon, tribal nations are marking the month with festivals, powwows, and community gatherings. November is an opportunity for non-Native residents to listen, learn, and show up for the communities that have called this land home for thousands of years — long before Jefferson County was incorporated or Madras was a town on the map.
