Wildfire crews from multiple agencies rushed to contain a new fire Sunday afternoon that ignited in the Ochoco National Forest, about 15 miles east of Prineville — territory many Jefferson County residents know well from hiking, hunting, and camping trips.

Central Oregon Fire Information reported the fire, designated Incident 0418, started at approximately 3:02 p.m. on July 12 in heavy timber fuels. As of Sunday evening, the fire was estimated at 0.5 acres with no containment. No evacuations were in effect.

Initial attack resources included three engines, one hand crew, overhead personnel, and air resources en route. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.

High Fire Danger Persists

The new ignition comes as Central Oregon continues to bake under hot, dry summer conditions that fire managers say create prime conditions for rapid fire spread. The 2026 fire season officially began May 8 and remains in effect.

Fire officials have repeatedly warned residents in recent weeks that even minor sparks — from vehicles, equipment, or burning debris — can escape quickly in dry grass and timber. Jefferson County sits squarely within the zone of elevated concern, where rangeland, juniper, and ponderosa pine all carry substantial fuel loads heading into mid-July.

What Residents Should Know

  • Campfires are prohibited on most public lands in Central Oregon under current Level 1 and Level 2 restrictions — check centraloregonfire.org for the latest maps before heading out.
  • All outdoor burning requires checking with the Oregon Department of Forestry before lighting. Call ODF at 541-447-5658 for the Central Oregon District.
  • If you see smoke or fire, call 9-1-1 immediately. Do not assume someone else has already reported it.
  • Air quality can shift quickly when fires grow — monitor fire.airnow.gov for real-time conditions near Jefferson County.

The Ochoco National Forest borders Jefferson County to the southeast, making fires in that corridor a direct concern for residents in the Ashwood area and eastern parts of the county.
