Madras residents who have made hopeful U-turns through the McDonald's construction zone can mark their calendars: the restaurant is on track to reopen in December, and the wait will be worth it.

Owner and operator Mason Rodby confirmed this week that the fast-food staple — closed since a minor fire in February — is undergoing a complete renovation rather than a simple repair. The February blaze caused enough damage to the plumbing and electrical systems that a full rebuild made more practical sense than a patch job. Rodby and his team decided to use the downtime as an opportunity to significantly modernize the location.

What's Changing

When the Madras McDonald's reopens, customers will notice several meaningful upgrades:

  • A third drive-through lane — adding capacity to one of the busiest drive-throughs in the area
  • More self-ordering kiosks in the lobby to speed up in-store ordering
  • An enlarged kitchen to support faster service and higher volume

One beloved feature is staying put: the indoor play area. That's increasingly rare at modern McDonald's locations, and Rodby's team made a deliberate choice to preserve it for Madras families.

Demand Has Been Steady — Even Mid-Construction

Rodby told KTVZ that the closure hasn't stopped loyal customers from showing up. "We've been under construction for three weeks and we'll get anywhere from five to 10 customers trying to go through the drive-through, trying to come inside, to get McDonald's," he said. "But unfortunately, they won't be open till December to serve those guests."

KTVZ crews witnessed at least one would-be customer drive directly into the active construction zone in search of a meal — a scene Rodby said has repeated itself regularly since crews broke ground.

Staff Supported Through the Closure

The closure hasn't meant unemployment for most of the McDonald's team. A large portion of Madras employees were placed at nearby locations in Redmond and Prineville, and McDonald's corporation provided financial assistance — including travel and housing support — for workers who needed to commute or temporarily relocate.

The Madras McDonald's is one of the more prominent quick-service restaurants in Jefferson County, drawing customers from across the region. Its extended closure has been felt, particularly for families and travelers passing through on U.S. Highway 97.

No specific reopening date within December has been announced. Rodby indicated the timeline remains on track barring construction delays.
