Jefferson County marked America’s 250th birthday in style Friday, with Madras hosting a full slate of Independence Day traditions that drew families from across the region to Sahalee Park and the surrounding city streets.

The theme this year — “Red, White and Blue — 250 Years With You” — was chosen to reflect both the patriotic spirit of the holiday and the nation’s milestone sesquicentennial anniversary. Debbie Taylor, executive director of the Madras/Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, said the day was really about something simple: bringing people together.

“I think for us, it’s really just about being together with family and friends,” Taylor said. “That’s really what it is — just to have that time for people to come together, enjoy those traditional events. It’s for everyone just to be together and to celebrate.”

A Full Day of Tradition

The day kicked off early with a breakfast hosted by Madras Elks BPOE beginning at 7 a.m., followed by the Todd Beamer Memorial Run — a beloved local road race honoring the Jefferson County native and September 11 hero. Runners gathered at 7 a.m. for the annual event before giving way to food vendors and entertainment along the parade route.

At 9:45 a.m., the national anthem was performed and an American flag was ceremonially raised before the Fourth of July Parade stepped off at 10 a.m. from 10th & B Streets, winding down to 7th Street through the heart of downtown Madras.

Sahalee Park’s splash pad also proved a popular stop throughout the afternoon, with families taking advantage of the cool water on what was a warm summer day in Central Oregon.

Fireworks Cap the Night

The evening culminated in a fireworks show launched from Madras High School beginning at 10 p.m. The display, visible from nearly anywhere in the city, drew crowds to the high school grounds and rooftops and backyards across town.

This year’s celebration carried extra weight as the United States marks 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with communities across Central Oregon choosing to celebrate the milestone with hometown gatherings rather than large regional events.

A Community Staple

The Madras Fourth of July celebration has been a cornerstone of the community calendar for decades, with the Todd Beamer Memorial Run carrying particular local significance. Beamer, a Madras High School graduate, was among the passengers aboard United Airlines Flight 93 on September 11, 2001, and became known for his role in the passenger uprising against hijackers. The annual run in his honor draws participants from across Jefferson County and beyond.

Chamber officials say the event continues to grow year over year, with strong support from local businesses and community volunteers who make the day possible.
