Madras High School's Tate Alire tees off today at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla for the two-day Tri-Valley Conference golf championships, arriving as one of the top contenders in the 4A classification after a breakout senior season that his coach says was always in the cards.

Alire holds the lowest scoring average of any golfer in the Tri-Valley Conference and is ranked third in Class 4A statewide — a remarkable climb for a player who rarely broke 80 as a junior.

From Mid-80s to the 70s: A Season Transformed

The turnaround started last summer when Alire committed to a more rigorous offseason routine. When the high school season began this spring, the results were immediate — and in some cases, startling.

After opening with an 82 at Indian Creek Golf Course in Hood River, Alire had a breakthrough at Desert Peaks Golf Club in Madras, his home course, shooting an even-par 72 with four birdies. He won that tournament by five strokes.

"That was just a confidence-booster because it is my home course, it is my stomping ground and I expected to do well there," Alire said. "But when I shot even, it felt like a barrier had been broken."

He followed that round by shooting a 73 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell the very next day, then a 76 on the coast at Astoria Golf and Country Club. At a state preview at Emerald Valley — the site of the 4A state championships — he shot a 75 and finished second overall.

A Coach Who Saw It Coming

Madras boys golf coach Johnny Wilson was not surprised by any of it.

"Last year he had the game and the work ethic, just not the self-belief," Wilson said. "He's maybe added a little speed and a few yards since last year, but it was just a matter of him being in the 70s a couple of times and getting comfortable with it and realizing that he belongs in that conversation. It's just become his new normal."

Alire himself echoed that psychological shift. "It just feels natural, almost like you are flowing," he said. "For me, I just had to get into a place where everything feels natural."

What's Next

The Tri-Valley Conference championships run today and Wednesday, May 11-12, at Arrowhead Golf Course in Molalla. Following the conference meet, the 4A State Championships will be held May 18-19 at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell — a course Alire has now played multiple times this season and where he's already posted a strong result.

For a county that doesn't always get to celebrate individual athletic excellence on a statewide stage, Tate Alire's season is one worth following to the end.
