The Madras High School girls volleyball team will not advance in the Oregon 4A state playoffs after the Jefferson County School District announced the team has forfeited its first-round match against Marist Catholic due to a student conduct issue — ending what had otherwise been a solid season for the White Buffalos.
District Statement
The school district issued a statement confirming the forfeit, though it did not go into specifics about the nature of the conduct:
"We made this decision due to learning about student conduct that does not meet our standards and expectations for our student athletes. We did not come to this decision lightly and recognize the disappointment this will bring to our families. However, it is important to maintain our standards and expectations of our athletic programs."
A Season Worth Noting
The forfeit closes a campaign in which Madras went 11-10 overall and 7-3 in the Tri-Valley Conference — a respectable record that earned the program its playoff berth. Earlier in October, the White Buffalos swept Gladstone 3-0 in a regular-season match. Earning a spot in the 4A bracket is a meaningful achievement for a school in a county with a smaller enrollment base.
Marist Catholic Advances
As a result of the forfeit, Marist Catholic advances in the 4A state bracket without playing the match. The Eugene-area school, which won the 4A state championship last season, now continues its title defense without facing Madras on the floor.
Looking Ahead
Forfeits due to conduct issues are uncommon in Oregon high school athletics. The Oregon School Activities Association takes player conduct seriously, and districts bear the responsibility of enforcing standards even when playoff eligibility is on the line.
The Madras volleyball program has shown consistent growth in recent seasons, and coaches and players will have the offseason to reflect and rebuild. For the seniors on the roster, it is a painful way to end a high school career. For underclassmen, the experience may shape what kind of team they choose to be going forward.
