The Jefferson County Fair & Rodeo kicks off July 8, and organizers say it's shaping up to be one of the largest events in recent memory. There's just one thing missing this year: the carnival rides.

Bart Platt, manager of the Jefferson County Event Complex, confirmed this week that the fair's longtime carnival vendor will not be able to attend due to a severe shortage of workers.

"Unfortunately, our carnival provider informed us that they are unable to attend this year's fair due to a shortage of workers," Platt said.

A Nationwide Staffing Crisis

The cancellation is part of a broader pattern affecting traveling carnivals across the country. According to reporting from thenewsguard.com, the carnival operator has already been forced to cancel 14 events this season and currently has an entire carnival sitting idle because it cannot find enough employees to staff and operate the rides safely.

"Those staffing levels have not materialized," a company representative said.

Carnival operators have long struggled to recruit seasonal workers willing to travel for the work. The shortage has grown worse in recent years as labor markets tightened and competition from other seasonal employers — including agricultural operations across Jefferson County itself — has intensified.

What's Still at the Fair

Despite the absence of carnival rides, the Jefferson County Fair & Rodeo promises a full slate of activities. According to fair organizers, this year's event is "shaping up to be our largest event" yet. Visitors can expect:

  • Rodeo events at the Jefferson County Event Complex
  • Livestock and agricultural exhibitions
  • 4-H and FFA youth competitions
  • Entertainment, vendors, and food
  • Fair Queen Nora Gates representing the county

Fair Dates and Location

The Jefferson County Fair & Rodeo runs July 8–12 at the Jefferson County Event Complex in Madras. More information is available at the Jefferson County website or by contacting the Event Complex directly.

Organizers say they hope to have carnival rides back in future years and are looking at alternative vendors for 2027. In the meantime, they're encouraging families to come out anyway and enjoy everything else the fair has to offer.
