The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) responded to 883 calls for service last month, with deputies active across the county's sprawling unincorporated areas, according to the August activity report released this week.

Of the total calls, Crooked River Ranch led unincorporated communities with 104 calls for service, followed by Culver with 50, Metolius with 37, and Camp Sherman with 6. No calls were logged from Ashwood during the month.

Deputies conducted 138 traffic stops in August, resulting in 20 traffic citations and 2 criminal citations. The office opened 89 total cases and made 29 in-custody arrests.

The published report also details notable incidents from the first two weeks of September:

  • September 8: Deputies contacted Oscar Cervantes-Aguilar, 26, of Klamath Falls, while in Jefferson County. He was arrested on a misdemeanor warrant out of Klamath County and released with a citation to appear.
  • September 8: A deputy located and recovered a vehicle reported stolen out of Redmond. Evidence was collected and forwarded to the Redmond Police Department for follow-up.
  • September 8: Kelly Ray Hardwick, 37, of Bend, was arrested on a warrant out of Deschutes County.
  • September 9: Deputies responded to a domestic assault in Metolius. Jose B. Contreras Rios, 45, of Metolius, was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault, harassment, menacing, and coercion.
  • September 9: JCSO detectives received and reviewed two separate Department of Human Services cross reports — one from the Madras area, one from the southeast county. Cases were investigated jointly with DHS or forwarded to the Oregon State Police.
  • September 11: Deputies investigated a report of criminal mischief on Highway 97 south of Madras.
  • September 12: A theft report was taken from Crooked River Ranch.
  • September 13: Deputies responded to a criminal mischief complaint near Southwest Gem Lane on Southwest Culver Highway. This is listed as an ongoing investigation.

The JCSO notes that all items in the activity log represent charges, not convictions.

Crooked River Ranch's consistent position as the busiest unincorporated community for service calls reflects both its size — with more than 6,000 residents — and the reality of rural community policing without incorporated law enforcement of its own. The JCSO maintains a dedicated outreach program for CRR residents and holds monthly community meetings at the CRR Fire Department, 6971 SW Shad Road in Terrebonne, on the third Tuesday of each month.
