A fire destroyed a home and a nearby trailer on Monday, May 26, approximately six miles north of Madras, according to Central Oregon Daily reporting on the incident.
Photos from the scene circulated online showed both structures fully engulfed in flames while fire crews worked to respond. No information has been publicly released regarding whether anyone was injured, displaced, or present in the structures at the time of the fire.
Context: Fire Conditions Are Severe
The structure fire comes as fire officials across Central Oregon have been warning residents of unusually dangerous fire conditions this spring. While structure fires have distinct causes from wildland blazes, dry conditions, high winds, and low humidity can cause fires to spread rapidly once ignited.
Jefferson County Fire and EMS — which just completed a major expansion of its primary station in Madras — covers a vast area of the county, and rural response times can be longer than in urban areas. Interim Chief Kasey Skaar noted at a recent open house that the department responded to more than 3,000 calls last year.
Fire Safety Reminders
With fire season arriving early and conditions expected to worsen through summer, Jefferson County residents are encouraged to:
- Ensure working smoke detectors are installed in every bedroom and on every level of the home
- Clear defensible space around structures, particularly in rural areas
- Know your evacuation routes and have a go-bag ready
- Report fires immediately by calling 9-1-1
Additional details about the cause of the north-Madras fire and whether anyone was displaced are expected to be released by Jefferson County Fire and EMS. The Madras Bulletin will update this story as more information becomes available.
