Two fast-moving wildfires ignited by a powerful lightning storm are burning across Jefferson County Friday morning, prompting evacuation notices and stretching fire resources across Central Oregon. Residents near Madras and Crooked River Ranch should monitor evacuation levels closely and be prepared to act.
Brewer Fire: 5,000 Acres East of Madras
The Brewer Fire, located approximately 11 miles east of Madras, has grown dramatically since it was first reported Tuesday afternoon as a 20-acre blaze near Brewer Reservoir. By late Thursday night, the fire had exploded to an estimated 5,000 acres with zero containment, according to Watch Duty. Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation notices have been issued for surrounding areas. Evacuation levels are changing rapidly and residents should check the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Facebook page and the Watch Duty app for the most current information.
Akawa Butte Fire: 3,200 Acres Near Crooked River Ranch
The Akawa Butte Fire, first reported Thursday afternoon about nine miles northwest of Crooked River Ranch, quickly grew to 3,200 acres. Level 2 (Be Set) and Level 1 (Be Ready) evacuation notices are in effect for areas near the fire. Residents in Crooked River Ranch and surrounding communities should have go-bags ready and a plan in place.
What Sparked It All
A powerful thunderstorm system moved through north-central Oregon on Wednesday evening, producing more than 2,000 lightning strikes in hot, dry terrain. The Central Oregon Fire Management Service reported that the storms ignited more than 50 new fires across the region. Many fires started in remote areas, but with critically dry fuels and forecasted winds, small ignitions have grown rapidly.
The two Jefferson County fires are among the largest in Central Oregon. Other significant fires are burning in Wheeler, Crook, Sherman, and Wasco counties, though those are not in immediate threat of Jefferson County communities at this time.
What To Do
- Level 1 – Be Ready: Be aware of the danger, monitor updates, prepare to leave quickly.
- Level 2 – Be Set: Have your belongings and family ready to leave on short notice.
- Level 3 – Go Now: Leave immediately. Do not wait to gather belongings.
